FAQ

Why Do PackagingVolume Differences Create Huge ImportCost Gaps for Solar WallLights?

When sourcing outdoor solar walllights, I used to mainly compare unit price, wattage and appearance.

After getting handson with import business, I learned unit price is only one cost component. Carton dimensions have a direct impact on ocean freight expenses.

Especially for markets such as Nigeria where freight is charged per CBM, two products with similar FOB prices can end up with totally different landed costs if their packaging volumes differ greatly.

Below are sidebyside packaging specifications.

Competitor carton: 82.5 × 32.3 × 8.5 cm Volume: 0.825 × 0.323 × 0.085 ≈ 0.02265 CBM

Our allinone garden solar walllight carton: 20 × 8 × 72 cm Volume: 0.20 × 0.08 × 0.72 = 0.01152 CBM

Volume gap per carton: 0.02265 − 0.01152 = 0.01113 CBM

Our packaging reduces volume by around 49%.

1. Small perunit gap becomes massive for bulk orders

Sample ocean freight rate to Nigeria: 380 USD / CBM.

Competitor theoretical freight per carton: 0.02265 × 380 ≈ 8.61 USD

Our product theoretical freight per carton: 0.01152 × 380 ≈ 4.38 USD

Freight difference per carton ≈ 4.23 USD.

The gap is negligible for 12 cartons. For a bulk import of 2000 cartons: 4.23 × 2000 ≈ 8,460 USD.

The theoretical freight gap for 2000 cartons can hit 8,460 USD. This is a material amount for bulk importers.

For the same order size, welloptimised packaging (without sacrificing product protection) cuts total CBM and lowers average freight cost per unit.

2. Distributors should evaluate total landed cost per set

From a buyer’s perspective, carton visual size matters less than this key question: How many sellable units can I bring in for one container and fixed freight budget?

Compact packaging allows more goods inside the same container subject to transport constraints.

For distributors with regular reorders, cost differences keep accumulating. One shipment may only differ by a few hundred USD, but the gap grows significantly after several container shipments within one year.

Today when evaluating solar walllights, besides FOB price, I require suppliers to provide: Carton Size CBM per Carton Quantity per Carton Container Loading Qty

Only with this full dataset can you calculate real import cost.

3. Packaging efficiency is part of product design

I once thought packaging is only handled after a product is fully developed.

Bulksourcing experience shows that a compact mechanical structure enables better packaging optimisation and higher space utilisation in transit.

This does not mean smaller is always better. Packaging must sufficiently protect lamps, preventing damage to lamp body, LED modules, brackets and accessories during transit compression.

The real benchmark: can we eliminate wasted packaging space while maintaining adequate product protection?

For Nigerian importers, this design delivers tangible financial benefits: Lower total CBM for the same order quantity More product volume within fixed freight budget Better control over average logistics cost per unit

Note: 380 USD/CBM is for illustration only. It excludes customs clearance, port charges and inland delivery. Actual freight shall follow forwarder quotations and real containerloading plans.
