Lighting Renovation Project of Parliament House, Islamabad, Pakistan
Project Overview
This night‑scene and campus road‑lighting upgrade project is located in the core government district of Islamabad, capital of Pakistan. The renovation covers Pakistan Parliament House and its surrounding compound. As a national‑level landmark government building, Parliament House undertakes national legislation and important official reception tasks. The whole site consists of the main building, a large front stone plaza, circular driveways and landscaped walkways. A large number of government staff visit the compound every day, and its night‑time appearance represents the public image of the national administrative zone.
Before renovation, the original lighting facilities inside the compound were ageing. The average illuminance of plaza walkways at night was only 9‑13 lux with uneven light distribution. Multiple dark zones existed at green‑belt corners. Without supporting exterior night lighting, the building had low visibility after dusk and the whole compound lacked a dignified night‑time atmosphere, which failed to match the status of this national landmark. The local government launched this comprehensive lighting‑upgrade project for both road‑landscape lighting and building night‑scene improvement.

Local Environmental Conditions
Islamabad features a humid subtropical climate with long hot summers, heavy rainfall and high humidity in rainy seasons, plus frequent dust during dry seasons. Long‑term outdoor exposure under high temperature, rain and dust may cause fixture rusting and circuit damp‑damage, so lighting equipment must deliver excellent waterproof, dust‑proof, high‑temperature‑resistant and anti‑corrosion performance.
Project Objectives
- Raise the average illuminance of main drive‑roads inside the compound to 22‑28 lux, achieve illuminance uniformity ≥ 0.70 on plazas and walkways, eliminate all dark zones completely and guarantee safe night‑time movement for government employees.
- Improve the building’s night‑time visibility with solemn, elegant lighting effects which are well‑harmonized with the modern architectural style of Parliament House.
- Enable lighting fixtures to adapt reliably to Islamabad’s hot‑rainy and dusty outdoor climate, reduce the annual failure rate of lamps to below 3% and cut long‑term maintenance workload for the compound.
- Build a high‑quality night‑time landscape for Islamabad government district and set a demonstration benchmark for national government‑building lighting renovation.
Project Outcomes

After completion of construction, driveways, front plaza and garden walkways within Parliament House compound enjoy sufficient and evenly‑distributed night illumination. All previous dark spots have been removed and night‑time safety is greatly improved. The new lighting system operates reliably under Islamabad’s hot, rainy and dusty weather, expected to reduce maintenance‑related workload by 62%. Soft and solemn night lighting perfectly highlights the magnificent look of Parliament House. This project has passed official acceptance successfully and become a benchmark demonstration case for lighting upgrade in Islamabad’s administrative district.
