Exterior Lighting Retrofit of Perdana Putra, Putrajaya, Malaysia

Project Overview

Located in Putrajaya, the federal administrative capital of Malaysia, Perdana Putra serves as the core administrative complex for Malaysia’s federal government. Blending Malay and Moorish‑Islamic architectural features, it features an iconic green dome, intricately carved facades and grand arcades for government affairs, diplomatic receptions and national‑level ceremoniesmyputrajay…. Facing Putrajaya Lake, the compound is surrounded by large government plazas and circular pedestrian walkways. Before renovation, outdated traditional luminaires suffered heavy lumen depreciation, resulting in uneven brightness on building facades and dark zones across plazas and walkways, weakening night‑time security and undermining the landmark’s solemn night‑time image.

This retrofit covers 31,000 ㎡ of government plaza and 1,420 linear meters of surrounding walkways. Linear wall‑washers deliver even illumination for main facades and arcades to reveal stone carving details; floodlights provide accent lighting for the green main dome, corner towers and main entrance portico; bollard lights supply functional lighting for plazas and walkways. A unified warm‑white static lighting scheme is adopted without colorful or dynamic effects, balancing solemn civic aesthetics and pedestrian safety.

Local Environmental Conditions

Malaysia features tropical rainforest climate with persistent high temperature and humidity, annual temperature ranging from 26‑32℃ and relative humidity consistently above 78%. Heavy rainfall occurs all year round. Located beside Putrajaya Lake, this site faces extra humid air plus mild salt‑laden moisture, making waterproof performance and anti‑corrosion capability critical for wall‑washers and floodlights. Luminaires need reliable long‑hour operation for night security patrols and on‑duty staff. The plaza receives around 2,600 visitors daily, with higher visitor volume on holidays.

Project Objectives

  1. Raise average illuminance of plaza and walkways from original 10 lux to target 24‑28 lux to satisfy safety requirements for security patrol and pedestrian movement.
  2. Achieve illuminance uniformity ≥0.70 for main activity zones, eliminating dark patches and over‑bright hot spots.
  3. Apply linear wall‑washers to illuminate arcades and carved facades; deploy floodlights to accentuate domes and tower contours. Adopt static warm‑white light, no colorful or flashing lighting for solemn civic visual effect.
  4. Wall‑washers and floodlights shall endure hot‑humid, rainy lakeside conditions; overall annual luminaire failure rate ≤3%.
  5. Reduce overall maintenance workload by 60%‑64% compared with pre‑retrofit status.
  6. Guarantee safe night‑time environment for around 2,600 daily on‑duty staff, security personnel and visitors.
